PAM
EVERARD
Having lived in many places in the world I find that now I am retired I have no preconceived idea of what “art” is and I feel free to put onto a canvas exactly what my body and instinct tells me to.
Beginning with a prepared canvas, I firstly have to try to completely empty my head. I will then make my first mark, followed by another mark to balance the composition, followed by another mark and another and so on. I find it necessary to work with a reduced palette else chaos might result. The colour and texture inspiration might come from a rusting old sheet of metal, a peeling barn door or pictures from the media, but on the best days it seems to come from nothing at all. On other days, when the head refuses to “empty”, I work by reducing a view or object to the bare essentials to try to capture exactly what it was that tempted me in the first place – this might be the light, the colour, or a shape.
Acrylic is the main medium. I use a large brush, scraper, or anything else that is within reach, for instance cloths, hands, tissues, print shapes and my own cut tiles.
